This week in the Morden forest, our explorers got stuck in with a large variety of activities and interactions as the autumn leaves continue to fall.
One of the books we have been focusing on recently has been Owl Babies, which is a story that explores how it feels to miss your mummy or loved ones when they aren’t around. The children took lots of time reading the book, discussing the characters, and crafting their own owls using wood cookies! Our little adventurers used a palm drill to create a hole in their cookie, glued leaf eyes and fabric beaks, and tied string to the top so they could wear them as they flew around the forest! The children also used them in their imaginative play, as they took on the characters of the Owl Babies to talk about their worries and look for mummy owl!
Printing has been a big part of our activities this week too - leaves have been pressed into paint and clay to decorate different areas of our space and allow the children to look in detail at the interesting shapes and textures. Our Little Forest Folk-ers really enjoyed dipping small leaves in soft clay to coat the back and using their fine motor skills to delicately stick the leaves to the bark of the trees in interesting arrangements and patterns “we’re making a Christmas tree” another child started making a ‘Diwali Tree’ because of all the beautiful colours and patterns they were seeing!
Natural materials are always in abundance in autumn! The children got super creative in one of our art activities, rolling conkers through colourful spats of paint, creating art of natural motion and interesting wobbly lines! This was so much fun to see, and provided a great sensory opportunity for our learners, they spent so much time seeing how far the painted conker would roll, depending on how far they could tip the cardboard. We can’t wait to see what fun activities and ideas next week brings!
