Our Week in the Forest
The rain this week has brought us lots of mud and puddles but also loads of fun! With the weather getting a little bit warmer we have been spotting signs of spring all throughout Chiswick Palace grounds. Every morning we find new patches of snowdrops and later in the week we saw beautiful purple crocuses popping their heads out of the ground and yellow daffodils with their sunny faces to the sky. With all the spring flowers the squirrels have been out busy digging up and nibbling on some of the new shoots. We’ve really enjoyed watching them chase each other around the trees and we’ve had lots of discussions about the difference between animals and plants. We also celebrated World Hedgehog Day! We talked about what hedgehogs like to eat and where they live, as well why they have prickly bodies. One of our friends shared how they protect themselves by rolling into a spiky ball. How clever! Then using clay and sticks we created our own small hedgehogs to keep the real ones company.
The sky gave us a break from the rain on Wednesday and we took advantage of the dry weather to visit the playground by the café. On the way, we noticed lots of fencing going up around Chiswick House and piles of ropes that looked like giant snakes. The people carrying everything explained that they were building a set for a new tv show that they would be filming over the weekend. How cool that we got to see how they get ready!
We’ve also been noticing more types of birds travelling through the forest. We’ve been having talks with the adults about how birds migrate from place to place depending on the season, especially as we’ve been seeing more activity in the skies from groups of geese. We were very impressed to hear how some birds fly as far we might travel on our holidays by plane. We would never be able to fly so far on our own! We also created some wood cookie birds with Jess, using our mark making skills by decorating them with colourful dots and carefully adding feathers for their tail. We finished these off by threading string through a hole to hang our beautiful creations.
Between swinging on swings in camp, going on amazing adventure walks, jumping in the giant puddles and building different houses from around the world (just to name a few!) we have had an incredible week of wet and wonderful fun!
