Our final week before the winter break, happy holidays everyone!
This week the children have enjoyed tool work activities organised by Olivia, Xiao and Rebecca. Continuing to build their strength and dexterity, they have sawed wood cookies as well as drilling holes. These activities were inspired by conversations with the children on what decorations they could make for their Christmas festivities… SNOWMEN! Wood cookies conveniently provided the precise shape required to make such a decoration, so they got to work! Now that we’ve sawed and drilled a few times, a lot of our younger Little Forest Folk-ers are able to remember the safety steps you take in order to use the tools. Once they had sawed their wood cookies, they used either the piñon or palm drill to drill their hole and then threaded their chosen colour of string through to attach them together before painting and decorating their snowmen. The children were able to describe exactly what they were doing and show it off to their families and friends!
Halfway through the week, high winds were forecasted so we had a scout hut day and yes, we still go outside! (just not in a wooded area). Here, the children cooked up a storm in our puddle kitchen and drove around in tricycles and on fire engines.
We ended our week back in the forest, phew! Where the robins were on full alert to why we weren’t there before. The children waited patiently to see how close the robins would come and some even had success in feeding the robin from their hands. The foxes and bunnies have worked very hard on announcing the location of the robins, working on their positional language. Is it up in the tree? On the branch? On the floor? Or Log? Continuing our love for robins and birds, the children searched for sticks, leaves and moss to make their own bird box to encourage the birds to come closer and shelter from the weather.
What a wonderful week we’ve had! We hope everyone has a lovely festive break, and we can’t wait to see you all in the new year!
