Twickenham - Welcome Aboard The Titanic!

Welcome Aboard The Titanic!

The Titanic has always been one of the many interests of our Little Forest Folk-ers here in Twickenham and this week in the forest, we are commemorating the Titanic anniversary, a very compelling story that happened over a hundred years ago.

At the start of the week the centre of the forest was reserved for our massive cardboard ship, but before sailing the children searched for letters hiding amongst the trees, once collected they realised the letters spelled out ‘Titanic’! (We of course left some time for the very important task of decorating the ship with brightly coloured paints.)

Once our adventurers were all dressed up, they climbed aboard and used their binoculars to check the route was clear… in the distance there was an iceberg but this was a special kind where underneath the blue tarpaulin were lots of lovely story books about ships to read and a nice cosy blanket to sit on.

Although there were no icebergs, there was plenty of ice. We had letters stuck in blocks of ice where the children had to figure out how to get them free to spell out a special word - ice fishing experiments and plenty of ice cubes made for some great sensory play in the tuff trays.

We have been busy making sailboats at the craft table this week using lots of recycled materials. The children made boats of all different shapes and sizes, decorating them with pens and natural materials, then setting them sail to see if they would sink or float! Some of the ships even made it down the bottom of our long pipe which our explorers made into a flowing river.

It’s been another wonderful week, where talking about a sombre moment in history ended up leading us to experiments, role play and plenty of fun… all this water play meant we had some unexpected sharks visiting our puddles at the end of the week too!!
