Wimbledon - A Week of History and Sports!

We have been spoilt this week with the weather and it has only aided our amazing activities organised by our educators, including a history lesson led by Carrie. In preparation for our cooking activity this week, some of the foxes went on an adventure walk to hunt for coppiced willow. The children measured 1.5m on each willow stick. We also learnt what coppicing is and why it’s done - coppicing involves felling trees at their base to create a ‘stool’ where new shoots can grow, this is an ancient trick to ensure regular supply of timber. These sticks were then used to cook Bannock bread on the fire the next day! Tammy set up our fire and Carrie explained the history behind Bannock bread. Bannock is originally from Scotland and was brought to Canada by fur traders. The Scottish fur traders would make it to bulk up their diet while travelling and their indigenous guides learned to make it and continued the tradition after the fur trade ceased. The children loved wrapping the dough around the tip of the stick. Once ready, they cooked their bread on the fire. Some of the children described it as “sticky, really good.” A truly fantastic day!

Another highlight of our week has been sports! Our Little Forest Folk-ers immersed themselves in all different sports, they’ve tried football, bowling, rugby and throwing! One day this week the foxes enjoyed a sports day too. They practised their hand-eye coordination in bowling and were able to show off their counting skills when receiving a challenge on subtraction - if we had ten pins and I bowled four over, how many do we have left standing? It brought joy and laughter to the foxes. Our second main sport that has been practised this week is football! We learnt which countries are competing is in the men’s Euros and discussed who we are going to support, with some children also making predictions along the way. A goal was setup in foxes with a dribbling task and shooting opportunity afterwards. Similarly, the bunnies organised a Subbuteo style game where they designed a kit on a wooden statue and used a ball to play! The pitch lines were drawn in the tuff tray and endless goals were scored!

It truly was a scoring week!
