It’s been a very busy week at Wimbledon. The children have been very lucky to be treated to a huge variety of activities this week. There has been something for everyone, and it has been wonderful to see our Little Forest Folk-ers enjoy the different activities so much!
We’ve had some super popular forest school activities on offer this week; from drilling bark to make necklaces, to making banana boats on the fire. The children have taken it in turns to participate in both activities, which both involve and develop different skills. When making necklaces, we had to focus on our drilling to create the holes in the bark to then thread the string through. Whilst over in the banana boat area, our little adventurers helped to prepare the bananas and put some ‘chocolate’ (all made from fruit juices) flavoured sauce inside them before cooking them on the fire. So much fun was had in both areas!
There has also been a lot of talk about robots this week which led to the children building a giant robot using sticks. One robot related conversation on the walk in to the forest inspired this challenge and encouraged the children to find as many useful sticks as they could as they made their way into camp. Later in the day they joined together on the meadow to create the shape of a giant robot whilst discussing with one of the educators about sizes, different parts of the robots body and which other resources they could use to bring the robot to life. This also helped them to create robot stories which they loved sharing with the rest of the group!
We have spent time focusing on Children’s Mental Health week too with a colour sorting activity. We spoke about the colours representing different emotions, and then the children had to move a coloured item to match the face that represented the corresponding emotion. It was a great way to help our little explorers understand the different feelings we all experience and also develop their fine motor skills by using the tweezers.
It has been a fantastic start to a new month, and we cannot wait to see what the rest of February brings for Little Forest Folk Wimbledon!!
