Morden - Writing Letters and Dinosaur Bones

We have had a beautifully sunny week in the forest! We have retired our winter hats and replaced them with sun hats and suncream! ☀️

As many of our Little Forest Folk-ers are getting “school ready!” We have been practising our pencil tripod grip and writing our name! We thought it would be a nice idea to talk and practise letter format. Many learners wanted to write a letter to King Charles, but we decided to ask David Attenborough if he would like to visit our forest.

We began by making our letter box, choosing animals and practising our cutting, working our finger muscles 💪🏻 This led to a discussion about animal habitats and how we can look after the oceans, forests and animals. What dangers are there to animals? Many spoke about plastic! “If animals eat plastic, they will get sick.” “Rubbish is dirty!” “Animals need trees for homes!” Lots of adventurers were keen to write. We started off with “Dear” followed by our message which was scribed by an educator. We talked about our favourite animals and also those that we share our forest with. “Baby magpies!” “Bird nests!” “Stag beetles!” “We will look after the forest!” Signing off our letters with “Best wishes.” “Kind regards.” Followed by our name, which many wrote independently! We posted our letters and are hopeful to receive a response.

We have also been practising our counting this week! With stones and car washes! The cars can enter the car wash, but we can’t have more than 10! Count each car as they enter the car wash. Which numbers come after 10? “Car wash is full!” Washing our “gems, stones, fossils and crystals” were a great way to practise our counting. “Can we all have five each?” This led to identifying numbers on our measuring cylinders showing numbers 5-20 and pipettes which show numbers 1-3! The pipettes are a great tool to strengthen our hands and fingers in preparation for more controlled mark making!

We discovered dinosaur bones and skeletons in our forest too! We filled a tray with cocoa powder, flour and oil and buried our bones inside. Many helped measure out “cups” to make the “dirt” for our skeletons. We used tools such as spades and brushes for our archaeology site! Discovering the bones and identifying which dinosaurs we had found dependent on the shapes and forms of the bones.

We look forward to more adventures next week! Have a great weekend and enjoy the bank holiday!
