We shifted our attention from shapes and patterns to all sorts of marks and prints this week as we set up lots of opportunities for mark-making of all descriptions. The children looked at a range of animal footprints in clay, flour and on paper and were on the lookout for horse, dog and magpie tracks on the paths into and out of camp. We used natural materials to make marks too, painting with leaves, printing with carved potatoes and rolling patterns into mud.
This week we also set about working on a new way to “check in” every morning and afternoon by starting to make ‘peg people’ versions of ourselves using pens, sticky tape, wool and ribbon. Soon enough, every person will have a peg version of themselves to place into a peg board that some of the children have been helping the educators to make. This in itself is an ongoing epic feat of strength, concentration and coordination as our little explorers have tried their hand at pulling the trigger on an electric drill, supported by an adult who guided and applied some pressure, so that the children could manipulate the trigger with two fingers and sometimes even one whole hand!
Our Little Forest Folk-ers are really making their mark on camp in all respects - we also created a new sign for the ‘book nook’ area, which was decorated entirely by the children, who were equipped with very special fabric pens, which they took great care of, even remembering to replace the lids as they drew (thank you, pals!).
Another wonderful winter week in the bag, we wish you an excellent weekend - see you next week!
